SARAH

Sarah (b. 1985) made her debut as an artist in spring 2022. She primarily works on paper and in watercolor. Sarah’s artworks is made in a pictorial language, where what you get out of the work is what you yourself see and interpret. Nothing more.

No manual is given to understand what these images are about or what notions and life circumstances they originate from. There is only the work itself.

Sarah was born and raised in France, moved with her family to Sweden and later settled in Denmark with her husband and two children. She is a trained teacher and educator. In her works, we are presented with strong psychological landscapes that expose an inner and outer narratives in a strong personal imagery. And it is precisely this - imagery - a wordless language that appeals to the senses, both physically and mentally. And it is Sarah's this special ability through her fantasy-like scenarios, where one can't escape looking at one's own self while searching for meaning. It compels us to look at who we are and what baggage we carry. One can sense that the images are connected to the past but cannot be translated one by one. They must be seen as independent artistic expressions that are not only based on the artist's universe of experience, but also to a large extent adaptations of universal human issues.

Sarah says she has a lot of pictures in her head that need to be expressed through her brushes. One senses that she as an artist thrives best in the wordless, non-interactive environment, where thoughts and feelings are processed artistically and not overly analysed. Her pictures can hit us emotionally, but they also depict beautiful safe places. In fact, these "difficult" narratives ARE a safe place for her mentally. For some of us, the safe place can be a sofa and a blanket, for others it is rolled up in a cave below the ground, in winter hibernation, waiting for better times. In any case, we all need safe places and to get away from whatever we experience as threatening. Sarah's art offers us images of this state, images that art very rarely deals with or even has the ability to portray. There is a great tenderness and caution in her works. At the same time there is also an enormous power, a wild urge to create, get rid of, express in the only form possible: An image. The result is very strong work that grips us. An intense presence that arouses all kinds of emotions.

Another example of Sarah's imagery is the bird. As a child she lived in a forest area and was closely connected with nature. Birds have therefore meant a lot in her life and have become a strong symbol for her. They can be protective or intimidating and they can often be seen as an alter-ego. Like when a person embraces a raven, thus reaching an acceptance of the self.

On the other hand, Sarah's landscapes are beautiful, and the atmosphere is almost reminiscent of the one we find in the Swedish painter Carl Larsson's works. A beautiful, almost poetic background for the characters acting in the image. One senses a search for beauty despite the fact that the painting expresses a less wonderful experience. Sarah says of one of her works that it has been created to express the feeling of "trying very hard and yet crashing"... This is how her art is experienced: the unspoken, unvoiced beautiful tenderness that goes straight into the heart; her strong, sometimes harsh works must be taken in with the quiet sensitivity of poetry, which can sometimes be experienced albeit as a crash.

HANS SANDBERG
1950 - 2016

A Danish artist who lived most of his life in Helsingør. Since his childhood, Hans had drawn a lot and used the pen's fabrications over the paper as a rescue plank for his inner thoughts, which was in total resolution.

By the time Hans was 16, his doctor prescribed him with strong drugs. He also self-medicated with illegal pills, hashish and alcohol and anything else he could find.

In his youth he lived in an attic room, where music was constantly heard, smoking lots of hashish whilst creating his paintings. Hans relationship with his father was not good, nor was he comfortable with the rest of his family. He also felt uncertain about many other things in his life as well.

However, like everyone else, he wanted to convince himself and others that he was capable of creating something worthwhile. And that became the steppingstone to his art.

From 1969 he started painting and drawing in an endless stream, maybe in the hope of a future way of a life. In 1974 he applied to the Academy of, but unfortunately, he wasn’t admitted. This setback created a further crisis and aggravation in Hans's life, and in 1979 he became a patient for the first time at a Psychiatric Hospital. He was diagnosed ‘a schizophrenic patient”.

Hans loved to travel. He visited great architectural works and arts. These countries included Spain, France, Morocco, Sweden and Denmark. He was also a keen sailor and showed an interest in ancient history depicting Columbus, which can be seen in various versions of his artworks.

Hans had an art-historical reference to his works with a twist. This style came from his own mind and inner body.
